What Is Glutathione?
Sometimes called the body's master antioxidant, glutathione is a naturally occurring substance in the body. It is made up of three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine and glycine. It's the body's natural detoxifier, which works to clear toxins and support cells of the body.
The body naturally manufactures glutathione in the liver and other cells. It can also be found in fruits and vegetables including avocados, tomatoes, spinach, asparagus, okra and strawberries. It's important to note, however, that dietary glutathione is not easily absorbed by the body.
What Does Glutathione Do?
As a powerful antioxidant, glutathione has several crucial roles in the body:
- Assists detoxification of the liver - glutathione helps the liver to process and remove toxins, heavy metals and other waste.
- Defends and protects cells from oxidative stress and free radicals.
- Ensures immune cells function effectively.
- Repairs and synthesises proteins and DNA.
What Causes Glutathione to Decline In The Body?
Glutathione production reduces naturally as we age. This is one reason why hangovers get worse and age spots increase as we get older!
The rate of decline increases if we live a stressful lifestyle, have poor eating habits, consume large quantities of toxins including alcohol and smoking. Exposure to environmental pollution and poor sleep can also deplete levels further.
Why Does Low Glutathione Matter?
Low glutathione levels cause oxidative stress to our cells and weaken our immune system. Many chronic health conditions are associated with low levels of glutathione. These can range from chronic fatigue, brain fog, changes in skin condition, frequent infections and joint pain to more serious conditions such as autoimmune disorders, anaemia, gastrointestinal disorders and more.
How To Increase Glutathione
Natural ways to boost your glutathione levels include increasing your intake of fresh fruit and vegetables, fish and good quality meat. You can also consider oral supplements, although these are not always well absorbed.
At CJA Aesthetics we offer intravenous glutathione treatments. These bypass the digestive system to maximum absorption and fast, noticeable results.
How Does A Glutathione Drip Work?
Ahead of your treatment we will carry out a consultation, to ensure our doctors are aware of any health issues which could impact on your suitability for a glutathione drip.
In preparation for your treatment we will mix glutathione into a sterile saline solution.
The solution will be administered via a small catheter into a vein in your arm. The solution is slowly infused, usually taking about 30 minutes. We can combine other nutrients, such as Vitamin C, with the infusion if you wish.
There's no down time, and you can resume your usual activities immediately.
Benefits of Glutathione IV Treatments
Detoxification
Without sufficient glutathione, your liver's detox pathways slowdown and toxins, including heavy metals, can build up in the body's tissues.
A glutathione drip can help detoxify the liver, removing these harmful toxins. This in turn can improve skin condition by clearing toxins and improving the appearance of conditions such as acne.
A healthier liver also helps to boost your metabolism and contributes to healthy weight management.
Antioxidant Boost
Boosting this crucial antioxidant in the body can help protect your cells against damage associated with aging.
Glutathione can also help your resist illness by boosting your immunity and support your immune response at times of stress and ill health.
Skin Health
Studies have shown that, when correctly administered, glutathione can even out skin tone and lighten dark spots. It boosts overall smoothness for a younger-looking, more radiant complexion.
Are There Any Side Effects to Glutathione Treatments?
Glutathione is generally well tolerated at the doses we offer at our clinics, but side effects can sometimes occur. These can include headaches, upset stomach, inflammation at the injection site. There are other rare side effects associated with high doses or long term use, including kidney injury. Our doctors will discuss these ahead of your treatment to ensure you can make an informed decision. As with all treatments, it is important to use fully qualified providers, like the doctors at CJA Aesthetics.
