Banish Breakouts - Acne Treatments at CJA Aesthetics Clinics in Southampton, Winchester and Across Hampshire

Acne is an extremely common condition, affecting up to 85% of people at some stage during their life.   Although it's often associated with the hormonal changes of adolescence, adult acne is on the rise.  A recent study of 92 private dermatology clinics in the UK recorded a 200% rise in the number of adults seeking specialist acne treatment.

Adult skin is different to teenage skin because it is less oily and the cells shed and renew at a slower rate, which means that products designed to tackle teenage acne are often too harsh for adult skin, causing irritation and dryness.  CJA Aesthetics Clinics in Southampton and across Hampshire are accredited treatment centres for acne, listed by the Acne & Rosacea Association UK as having practitioners who understand the condition and can prescribe effective treatments.

Take your first step towards clearer, brighter skin by booking a no-obligation skin consultation with one of our highly qualified skin specialists.  We have a number of treatment options available and can recommend the best solution for your particular skin concerns.

 Tips for Reducing Acne Breakouts

There are several steps you can take in your day-to-day routine that will improve your skin's condition and reduce the likelihood or severity of acne breakouts.  We recommend the following:

1)  Remove your make-up before going to bed

Your skin renews itself at night, so if you sleep in your make-up the natural process of cell turnover is impeded.   Dead skin cells will build up and block the pores, resulting in dull skin and acne. Always remember to cleanse your face thoroughly before bed.

2)  Sterilise your mobile phone

Your phone plays host to a mass of bacteria so when you hold it against your face, they will be transferred, along with accumulated grease, oil and other contaminants on the surface.  Ideally you should clean your phone daily with an anti-bacterial wipe.

3)  Wash your pillowcases regularlyAcne Treatments from Southampton Skin Doctors

Sweat, skin and hair products, skin cells and oils accumulate on your pillow cases causing a build up of bacteria and blocking the pores on your face.  Ideally you should change your pillowcases twice a week and give them a good hot wash.

4)  Steer clear of sugary snacks

We know how tempting sugary snacks can be, but the latest research indicates that diet does affect acne.  Eating sugary products will cause the body to release more insulin, which in turn increases hormone levels that can result in extra sebum production.   This oil can lead to blocked pores and spots, so we'd recommend cutting out the biscuits and chocolate and opting for more fruit and veg instead.  They're a much healthier option altogether!

5)  Moisturise skin with acne

Avoid skin care products containing alcohol as these can leave your skin dehydrated, prompting it to produce more potentially pore blocking sebum.  Instead, speak to your skin-care specialist about an appropriate non-comedogenic (non-pore blocking) moisturiser to rehydrate and soothe your stressed skin.
